Bike of the Month for August
What? A naked musclebike from Harley? It very nearly is. Harley is making a
genuine effort to provide something a little more interesting to showcase
the introduction of the Fathead (Twin Cam 88) engine. This is a seriously
strong engine, and with the 1550cc engine option, there is even more grunt
for your motoring pleasure. The new engine has been built to take advantage
of the stiffer Dyna chassis. The Blockhead (Evolution) engine was desgned
for the FXR frame, and worked wonderfully with it. The separate engine and
transmission flexed with the FXR frame, allowing just enough movement to
soak up the stress of a beefed up engine. The Blockhead never really took to
the stiffer Dyna chassis. The bottom end was a little weak, which never
mattered in the FXR frame, but problems popped up when the Blockhead was
made a little stouter and put in the Dyna frame. The new engine tackles that
issue, making the bottom end stronger, and solidly (but still separately)
mounting the engine to the transmission, making them even stiffer. Other
issues concerning sound, oiling, durability, and ease of manufacture were
also addressed. Then they put it in a new sporty Dyna chassis, and made me
want one. I was always more of a fan of the FXR chassis, but this bike may
finally let me get over it.
